Introduction
This is the brand new DSD version of the Klein DAC using AKM’s flagship Verita 32-bit 2ch DAC, the AK4490EQ. It is running in software mode with an on board upgradeable micro & LCD display.

Functionality
There are three inputs, coaxial, optical & USB. Coaxial & optical will accept 24 bit 192K, USB will accept up to 24 bit 756K PCM & quad speed DSD . (DSD 256) One of the exciting things about this new device is the remote adjustable internal digital filter, featuring five different filter settings. USB input is via an Amanero Combo 384 module in asynchronous mode. There is a multi-stage muting system to eliminate switch on/off & sample rate change noises. Also mixed PCM/DSD playlists will play fully click/pop free. The unit is supplied with a remote control that operates input selection, digital filter settings & DSD volume bypass mode. No software drivers are required for Mac or Linux, but are needed for Windows servers.

Design
The line output stage is a composite design using a high current class A diamond buffer teamed up with a superb Analogue Devices precision wide band amplifier. By combining two devices the result is far superior to the usual single output device. The USB board is powered by a very high quality low noise supply from within the Klein DAC, which contributes to sound quality greatly. The same system is used for the S/PDIF inputs (Coax & Optical). These are then processed by a Wolfson WM8804 which minimalizes jitter. There are no output capacitors and the max DC offset is less than a millivolt. Also compared to the standard Klein all power supplies have been upgrade with Gyrators (capacitor multipliers) This has greatly reduced incoming high frequency mains noise & interference.

Components
All components are individually selected for reliability, sound and are sourced through quality suppliers such as Element14, RS Components, Digikey & Mouser Electronics. The unit is powered by an external high capacity IE core 9v 2A AC linear Plug pack with an Australian C-Tick Compliance Mark. The device is assembled in house on a dual layer PCB utilizing ground planes.

Description
This is a high quality design based around the Muses 72320 electronic level control chip. Volume, input, muting, & display off are all controlled via a remote control with the information being displayed on a LCD screen. All settings are memorised & retained after power off. The signal path is very short & direct by being located at the rear of the preamp. The critical output stage is a high current composite class A diamond buffer. This type of output stage has a very low output impedance & great current drive. Also cable effect in minimal. All the audio sections are powered by independent low noise supplies incorporating Gyrators which gives excellent high frequency noise rejection & mains interference isolation. The power supply also incorporates Cree premium SIC schottky diodes plus CRC filtering using large Silmic II capacitors. All components are of high quality & picked for their sonic characteristics. The unit has a very effective muting system so there are no clicks/pops on switching on or off even with the power amplifier left on. The gain is adjustable to 2x or 4x via a rear panel switch to give good power amp compatibility.

Description
This linear low noise DC power supply is designed to improve the performance of digital audio accessory devices that are normally powered by small SMPS plug-packs. All the internal components are of high quality & are selected for reliability & sound quality where applicable. Capacitors are Nichicon Fine Gold, Panasonic or Elna Silmic II’s. It is powered by external IE core transformers. These have a distinct advantage over the usual Toroidal type as they have better isolation between the windings & lower bandwidth means less HF noise coming in via the mains. Also being external there is less radiated hum entering the power supply circuitry. Noise, hum & ripple levels are very low due to the common mode choke pre filtering & low noise Linear Technology high performance regulators. Also what helps to reduce noise as well is the use of Schottky diodes & a transformer LC snubber. The DC output cable/connection is an area that is often neglected; so I have gone to extra lengths here to get it right. The DC output on the supply uses a Neutrik 6 Amp XLR gold pin socket. The supplied DC cable uses a matching Neutrik gold pin plug hand soldered to a 10A lead with moulded DC barrel connector for ruggedness.

Specifications
Standard Low Noise Power Supply
A single output rated at 1.5 Amps & adjustable to 5v, 7.5v & 9v with an internal jumper adjustment. Noise level is approximately 20 uV to 40 uV depending on voltage setting. Ripple & hum rejection is approximately 100 dB. Short circuit & thermal protection.

Standard Low Noise Power Supply with higher voltage options
Same as above but with 9v, 12v, 15v outputs all at 1.5 Amps. $325
